With two years since the release of their last album, Sleeping With Sirens is back with more killer tracks. Coming into the scene in 2010, Sleeping With Sirens has released four full length albums and is on track to release their fifth, How It Feels To Be Lost, on Sept. 6. This will be their first album with Sumerian Records.
Sleeping With Sirens has crafted a very unique sound over the past nine years, so much so that when you hear Kellin Quinn’s voice and the music behind it, there is no mistaking what band it is. They are a band that has shaped and expanded the musical taste of many people, myself included. Their sound is a tight blend of everything from punk to metal, pop to electronic, hardcore to R&B and much more. That said, Sleeping With Sirens is going off script and writing a new chapter with How It Feels To Be Lost.
That change of pace can be heard in “Leave It All Behind”, the recently released single from How It Feels To Be Lost. This song has pieces of all of the previously mentioned genres plus a little extra that gives it the distinct Sleeping With Sirens sound. The song opens with some synth then the band comes in piece by piece to an explosive, heavy intro. The song shows Quinn’s range from his harsh screams in the verse to the soft choruses. The music matches the vocals being heavy in the verses to a light and calm chorus. I love the music in the song but what stood out to me the most were the lyrics. Just like the music is a good blend of heavy and clean, the lyrics blend the dark side of pain with the contrasting light side of love and companionship. A good example is “Would you be so surprised if I gave up tonight? // I’m barely breathing” from the second verse contrasted with “I’ll be your hope when you are hopeless // Together we are not alone // You’re not alone” in the bridge.
If the rest of How It Feels To Be Lost meets the quality of “Leave It All Behind”, we are all in for a treat. This summer Sleeping With Sirens will be playing in two of the tours covered in our previous articles, Rockstar Disrupt Tour and Vans Warped Tour. And in the fall they will be at Exit 111 Fest in Manchester, TN on Oct. 12 and Las Rageous in Las Vegas, NV on Oct. 18.
