They’ve had a few EPs, singles and plenty of covers but, the post-hardcore band Our Last Night is finally releasing a new full length album! They will release Let Light Overcome on March 8, almost 4 years after their last full length album, Younger Dreams.
So far, Our Last Night has released two singles from the album, “Demons” and “The Leap”. The lyrics in “Demons” speak about the darker side that we can all have at times but also that we can fight it. “We all have a dark side // Don’t be scared you can’t hide // So we beg that we have the strength to fight”. One of the trademark pieces of Our Last Night is the harmonies between Trevor and Matt Wentworth, with Matt singing and Trevor singing and screaming. That was evident in “Demons” with Trevor starting the second verse with some heavy screams. You can definitely hear some old Our Last Night sounds in this song.
“The Leap” opens with a catchy guitar riff. Then the verse has Matt and Trevor switch on the vocals about every two lines which works great when Trevor starts to scream because of the contrast with Matt’s softer voice. Similar to “Demons”, the second verse in “The Leap” starts with Trevor screaming. This song is about not being afraid to take chances, “You’re a hundred feet above the ocean \\ And the water’s all you need \\ But you’re paralyzed, afraid to take the leap”.
If the rest of Let Light Overcome is like these two songs, it will be a very positive and encouraging album. I’m excited to check out the rest of it when it drops on March 8.
Our Last Night is also starting a tour with State Champs on February 28. This is a nationwide tour so check out if they’ll be at a city near you. I’ve seen them before and it should be a great show. I may be going to the show in New York, NY on March 8 so let me know if you’ll be there!
I’ve been an Our Last Night fan since their Age of Ignorance album in 2012 and I am excited to see what directions they have taken with Let Light Overcome.
