August 21, 2018: that is the date Bring Me The Horizon (BMTH) finally broke silence with new music after almost three years, following the release of the hit album That’s the Spirit. First, we can talk about That’s the Spirit. This album was full of bangers and, in my personal opinion, you could listen to the album cover to cover without having to skip a track. This album also provided the opportunity to transition and evolve their sound from some of their heavier albums. There was, in essence, no screaming or harsh vocals; unlike the album Sempiternal. That’s the Spirit gave frontman Oliver “Oli” Sykes the opportunity to embed some raw and emotional bridges as well as incorporate melodic choruses that anyone can sing at the top of their lungs.
Finally, Let’s fast forward to the present! “MANTRA” is the first single from BMTH’s 6th studio album Amo (translates from Spanish meaning love). The hit single provides listeners with a new but familiar sound in certain aspects. One thing is clear, they do not abandon their heavy rock sound, but BMTH also provides something new with how relevant the story told can be applicable to one’s life. The song starts off with the lyrics “Do you wanna start a cult with me?” From these lyrics, Oli challenges the listeners to not blindly following the paths of the media outlets and any person in the limelight. Instead, he urges people to make their own path and be who they are because individuality is something to be sought after. With the urge of individuality comes the aspect that there is nothing wrong with looking up to people. As a society we still need to think on our own, as this point is brought forward throughout lyrics in the chorus such as:
“Before the truth will set you free, it’ll piss you off
Before you find a place to be, you’re gonna lose the plot.”
This pushes the idea of thinking for yourself in the bridge with:
“You know you gotta work the corners of your mind now
All I’m asking for’s a little bit of faith
You know it’s easy to, so easy to believe.”
“MANTRA” is definitely a banger. It pushes people to learn to be themselves and think on their own. I want to say that with the release of this song that BMTH is back, but honestly I do not think that they went anywhere. Amo is scheduled to drop January 25, 2019 and the band is currently out on the First Love World Tour, so check their website to see when they will be coming to your town. To answer your question, Oli , I definitely want to join a cult with you as long as you keep challenging listeners with incredible new music.
